After shoving Hansel in the oven, the witch turns to Gretel - who is currently fending the witch off with a gingerbread chair - and says:

“I can’t believe you thought a trail of breadcrumbs would save you. I mean, honestly, this is a forest! It’s full of animals. Honestly, the very idea that a dumb shit like you thought you could get the better of me is absurd.”

Gretel hits her in the face with said chair. To be fair to the witch, she takes the chairshot like a champ.

“Ow!”

“Did you know,” says Gretel, “that crows are capable of facial recognition?”

“Eh?” Says the witch, clambering to her feet and pulling a candy cane sledgehammer off the wall. “What’s that got to do with anything?”

“Not only that,” Gretel continues, “but they can remember both friends and enemies. And they’ll often follow people they remember as friends.”

The two fence with their sugared weapons for a moment, before the witch knocks the chair out of Gretel’s hands.

“Enough with the bird facts! Honestly, this whole attempted escape has been utter clownshoes. Get in the fucking oven!”

She seizes Gretel by the collar. Gretel immediately sandbags, letting her whole body go limp. This eminently practical defense forces the witch to try and deadlift her. Which is hard, as the witch often skips leg day.

“For example,” Gretel says, as the witch struggles and grunts, “if you feed crows a lot of breadcrumbs, they’ll probably start to see you as a friend and follow you in the hope of more food.”

The witch stops. Outside, she hears the thunder of wings.

“They’ll even bring you shiny things they find as presents!” Says Gretel, as a corner of the gingerbread ceiling is suddenly cut away by a large crow with a knife in its mouth.

“Oh shitballs.” Says the witch, as the crows descend. “I hope you know this is a great unkindness.”

“Technically,” Says Gretel, “It’s a murder.”

done pretending that furries aren't an easy target online for bigots and a growing target in general right wing spaces and news because to them furries embody the sexual deviancy they see as inherent to being gay and trans (especially because of how many gay and trans people are furries). and if you deny it i think i will just beat you with a hammer for a little bit until im bored

assamiscuddlepillow

furry hatred has always been fueled by queerphobia. There was an article maybe a decade or almost ago about a bunch of people that were big in the early 90s and 2000′s furry hatred on the internet (many of them from SomethingAwful, because everything bad comes from SomethingAwful) and how they admitted that yeah, furry hatred was because they were openly and unabashedly and unashamedly queer and that was not allowed.

toskwar

I've said it many times before- possibly on this blog, despite how new it is. I'll say it again here.

I have a litmus test for whether or not someone has interrogated their beliefs, or whether they may be easily led, unaware, or an outright bigot.

It's furries.

If someone bashes furries just because (As in, the general "ew furries lol" kind of bashing), I know they fall into one of those negative groups- easily led, unaware, or bigot. They, at best, have not examined what they believe in any meaningful way, and at worst, have done so and decided that they like being a bigot.

"Anarchist" but gets triggered when people voluntarily don't wear bicycle helmets.

Gravity legally cannot hurt you if you scream "NO GODS NO MASTERS" immediately before impact

completelybitch

I'm so fucking tired of this bicycle helmet discourse. Bike helmets aren't going to do shit to protect you if you get hit by a car

katelyn-danger

Most of the time... Bike accidents.... Involve things.... Other than cars...... like the ground....also it's safety gear..... Wearing it is non negotiable.... You are one accident away from being permanently disabled..... You need to protect your brain

Is OSHA and other safety regulations also cop behavior?

katelyn-danger

*sigh* The belief that OSHA and other safety regulations are cop behavior are common opinions that people have, anarchist or not. Wearing PPE is annoying and often uncomfortable, sweaty, and cumbersome. People also generally hate being told to be careful, because they believe that "be careful" is synonymous with "hey, you're too stupid to do that without hurting yourself".

But all it takes is one time for you to slip up and suddenly the grinder disk that would have gotten stuck in your safety glasses is in your eye, or you're getting treated for lung cancer because you didn't want to wear your respirator while you welded. These are decisions that you were free to make, but might seriously regret later on.

People will scream until they're blue in the face about how oppressive it is to have to wear a safety vest and hard hat on a construction site, but do you really think that the hammer that slipped out of your buddy's hand is going to take that into consideration when it collides with your skull?

No political theory will save you from an accident. You can either wear your PPE, or can die, unexpectedly, painfully, and slowly. The choice is yours. Go argue with a lathe if you feel so strongly about it.

In a statement to The Post, a spokesperson for NBCUniversal claimed the tree work is simply an annual ritual at this time of year. “We understand that the safety tree trimming of the Ficus trees we did on Barham Blvd. has created unintended challenges for demonstrators, that was not our intention. In partnership with licensed arborists, we have pruned these trees annually at this time of year to ensure that the canopies are light ahead of the high wind season,” they wrote. “We support the WGA and SAG’s right to demonstrate and are working to provide some shade coverage. We continue to openly communicate with the labor leaders on-site to work together during this time.”

Quick shoutout to the good people at @UniversalPics for trimming the trees that gave our picket line shade right before a 90+ degree week. pic.twitter.com/aZvvPYQ23i — Chris Stephens (@ChrisStephensMD) July 17, 2023ALT

Here is the weeping fig at Plummer Park that has been left alone because it is in weho. The photo embedded in the tweet is of an absolutely enormous tree with a huge lush shade canopy planted between a sidewalk and parking lot. — lauren (@aptkr_) July 17, 2023ALT

If those trees were pollarded annually, the cut areas would NOT look like that. There would be big knobs of old growth at the trimming sites. Not seeing any of that here. The way those trees were topped (not pollarded, which is a very careful process that has to begin when the tree is immature) is excellent way to kill them due to loss of hydration, open sites to infection and parasitism during the best time of year for both, lack of nutrition due to so little greenery and new budding growth being left, sunburn and other exposure damage, and a myriad of other possibilities. Plus, if they were topped annually, they would not have the lovely drooping branches seen in the other picture but would have tons of vertical suckers instead.

This is what an annually pollarded mature tree should look like:

If this was done by the city, the public works arborists should be protesting in front of city hall and screaming their heads off right now. I'm not hearing about that, so... Tree law!

my dnd party has run into an npc who may or may not be evil and may or may not decide to betray us and the dm was in chat today like “just so everyone knows…not addressing this comment at anyone in particular…his favorite colors are red and black…wink” so now i’m desperately trying to get a real physical friendship bracelet done before session tomorrow in the vain hope that i can somehow stop this npc from trying to do a murder on my party

sharkodactyl

UPDATE: the npc was in fact a shapechanged adult black dragon with violence and conquest in his heart. however he did let merry put a friendship bracelet on him and then when she was like “hm okay how big is your wrist in dragon form” he was like “you wanna see?” and then turned into a dragon and let merry measure him for a second, dragon-sized friendship bracelet. the dm described him afterwards as being deeply confused as to why he did this or let any of this happen to him. call that the merry effect

sharkodactyl

this guy is now a recurring npc because merry was SO determined to make him her friend that it actually somehow worked. he cast dream to talk to one of my party members like “hey…how’s it going…how are the tieflings in the party…not that i care…also i’m not lonely. bye” and the player was like “is he still wearing merry’s friendship bracelet in this dream” and the dm was like “yeah…”

sharkodactyl

and. in the most horrible plot twist of all. the gf stole his friendship bracelet.

Alarm bells being rung by Maureen Johnson on AI and the Big Publishers

roach-works

it’s not just about replacing big authors, it’s about replacing ghost writers completely. which will make publishing and writing for a living even more inaccessible. it’s bad all the way down.

sarahreesbrennan

Well said. For myself, I love writing tie-ins, it’s fun to be part of a creative process and I think I give back to that process with my voice, as screenwriters do when writing for many shows. Tie-ins were also a necessity for me to survive as a writer, and I don’t want to see that path closed for anyone. I’m glad the 60% of the actors’ union who are day and bit players were defended. If there were a novel writers’ union (I’m aware of the NWU but as an Irishwoman can’t join and can’t speak to it) we need focus on defending the vulnerable. Prioritising bestsellers, as with stars of the silver screen, guarantees no future stars and hardship for many. Bestsellers should leverage their status to champion midlisters & new voices. This absolutely should not be happening to anyone, and the vulnerable need protection.
